Design & Liquidity
This SilverTowne bar features a replica of the iconic Buffalo Nickel design, officially known as the Indian Head Nickel. The original coin design was created by sculptor James Earle Fraser in 1912 and first released by the U.S. Mint in 1913.
The obverse of the bar showcases a circular inset depicting the right-facing profile of a Native American chief, a composite portrait said to be based on three real chiefs: Iron Tail, Two Moons, and John Big Tree. The word "LIBERTY" is inscribed along the upper right rim of this circular element. Below the design, the bar is clearly stamped with the purity ".999", followed by "FINE SILVER", and then "TEN TROY OUNCES" in three distinct, centrally aligned lines.
The reverse of the bar features a circular inset with a majestic American Bison (buffalo) facing left, reportedly modeled after a bison named Black Diamond from the Central Park Zoo. Above the bison, along the upper rim of the circular design, are the words "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA" and beneath that, "E PLURIBUS UNUM". The remainder of the bar's reverse is adorned with a repeating diamond-shaped waffle pattern, providing a tactile and visually appealing texture.
Generic silver bars with widely recognized designs, such as this Buffalo replica, enjoy robust secondary market liquidity. Their popularity among both collectors and investors ensures a consistent demand, primarily driven by the intrinsic value of their silver content and the enduring appeal of the classic imagery.
About the Mint
SilverTowne Mint, located in Winchester, Indiana, has been a significant force in the precious metals industry for decades. While its origins as a coin shop trace back to 1949 when founded by Leon and Ruhama Hendrickson, the minting facility itself was established in 1973. This gives the mint over 50 years of experience in fabricating precious metal products.
SilverTowne has grown from a small operation into one of North America's largest private mints, renowned for its commitment to high quality, affordability, and exceptional purity standards, guaranteeing a minimum of .999 fine silver in its products. While the mint produces a wide array of bullion products, including legal tender coins, investment-grade bars, and rounds, its iconic "Prospector" silver rounds and bars were once considered its flagship products. SilverTowne is also highly regarded for its ability to produce custom-minted items, including commemorative pieces, awards, and promotional materials, often featuring intricate artwork, some even hand-painted. An interesting historical note is that SilverTowne Mint was acquired by A-Mark Precious Metals Inc. in 2016, further solidifying its presence in the global precious metals market.
