Design & Liquidity

The obverse of the 2023 American Silver Eagle features Adolph A. Weinman's iconic "Walking Liberty" design, originally created in 1916 for the Walking Liberty Half Dollar. This beloved depiction of Liberty has graced the American Silver Eagle since its inception in 1986. In 2021, Weinman's initials (AW) were added to the obverse design. The coin's reverse, introduced in 2021 as the Type 2 design, was created by artist Emily Damstra and portrays a majestic bald eagle landing on a branch. Prior to 2021, the reverse featured a heraldic eagle by John Mercanti. The American Silver Eagle boasts exceptional secondary market liquidity, being globally recognized and accepted by dealers and investors alike. Its weight, content, and purity are guaranteed by the U.S. government, providing unparalleled authenticity assurance and making it a highly trusted and sought-after bullion product for both investors and collectors. These coins often command premiums over the silver spot price, especially during periods of high demand, and are eligible for Individual Retirement Account (IRA) investments.

About the Mint

The United States Mint, the issuer of the American Silver Eagle, was established by Congress with the Coinage Act on April 2, 1792, and has been in continuous operation for over 230 years. Its first facility, located in Philadelphia, holds the distinction of being the first federal building constructed under the U.S. Constitution. The American Eagle bullion coin program, encompassing gold, silver, and platinum issues, is widely recognized as the Mint's flagship product line, with the American Silver Eagle specifically being acclaimed as the world's most popular silver coin. An interesting historical fact about the U.S. Mint is that it was one of the first federal agencies to employ women, hiring them as adjusters as early as 1795 to weigh blank coins.
